Maintaining a balanced and healthy diet is crucial for leading a healthy lifestyle, and this fact has been scientifically proven. By combining proper nutrition with regular, moderate exercise, you can enjoy numerous benefits that can significantly improve your quality of life. Seaweed, which comes in two types – sea moss and bladderwrack – is a nutrient-rich food that can provide a range of health benefits.
SEAMOSS BENEFITS | BLADDERWRACK BENEFITS |
1. Optimal thyroid function: Sea moss contains high levels of iodine which contributes to peak thyroid function. The thyroid gland is responsible for producing hormones that control your basal metabolic rate (BMR) which affects your metabolism, digestive system functioning, and healthy weight.
|
1. Anti-inflammatory: Fucoidans and Fucans which are sulfated polysaccharides found in most brown seaweeds. These substances have been researched for modulating a healthy inflammatory response, and have shown strong properties for supporting a healthy immune system and intestinal flora. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it is known for its relief of pain in the joints caused by rheumatoid arthritis. |
2. Immune system: Sea moss is said to have antiviral, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties. The Irish have used sea moss for centuries for treating sore throats, chest coughs, tuberculosis, bronchial infections, and pneumonia.
In fact, this is how a famous Irish cough syrup came about as it uses seaweed extract as one of its main ingredients. |
2. Heart health: Bladder wrack contains Fucoidan which is believed to help reduce high cholesterol levels, for optimal heart health & functioning.
Bladderwrack has the ability to stimulate the metabolism which in turn leads to weight loss, it is also a source of Fucoxanthin, a carotenoid that can help burn fat. |
3. Digestion: Sea moss has probiotic qualities which are ideal for digestive functioning. It’s a great natural remedy for those who suffer from leaky gut, ulcers, gastritis, indigestion, and constipation.
Sea moss’ mucilaginous texture makes it a good soothing agent for mucus membranes in the body especially those found in the gut. |
3. Digestion: contains alginic acid, a kind of dietary fiber. It can help bowel movements by relieving constipation and help with diarrhea by balancing out the bowels. It is rich in vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iodine, magnesium potassium, zinc, and vitamins A and C, and the fibre content supports a healthy gut.
|
4. Skin: The skin is the body’s largest organ, offering the greatest protection from the elements. Sea moss gel can be applied directly to the skin and is effective in treating sunburn, dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, and eczema because of its anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. | 4. Skin: Fucoidan also promotes elasticity of the skin which helps with anti-aging. It’s also great for healing minor wounds and skin irritations.
Bladderwrack may also help in the appearance of cellulite which is caused by fluid trapped between fat cells beneath the skin, its diuretic qualities help rid the body of the fluid build-up that produces cellulite. |
5. Natural Detox: Our body can naturally get rid of toxins, but it may need some help to eliminate an abnormal amount of toxins. Sea moss is an excellent natural solution for detoxification as it contains high levels of antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins. It gently and efficiently enhances your body’s natural ability to eliminate toxins and rejuvenate itself without requiring fasting or restrictions. | 5. Eye health: Bladder wrack is also rich in beta carotene which helps reduce the oxidative stress of blue light (sunlight and light from screens). It also protects the surface of the cornea, lubricating it, and helping with dry eye relief. |
